CONSULTANTS FOR SOCIAL FORESTRY
Background
Forest statistics in Pak/Bal
The UNDP funded Area Development Program intends to award a feasibility study for exploring possibilities of promoting social forestry in Balochistan.
Scope of Work
The consultant will have to perform the following tasks:
Review various publications of the Government, donor assisted projects and NGOs related with social forestry and poverty in Balochistan.
Undertake visits to the potential areas to be identified by the Area Development Program Balochistan and conduct interviews of the people associated using a structured questionnaire.
Meet with the key Government officials, major NGOs and private sector organizations engaged in forest conservation and using the products of forests.
Collect first-hand information related with successful social forestry in Pakistan.
Collect information related with social forestry in similar ecosystems.
Assess the potential of social forestry in Balochistan and its possible immediate consumption in the private sector.
Review the literature on social forestry and recommend the type of forest species which can grow in Balochistan environment and can be adopted quickly by the farmers with possible quick returns by using the products in private sector.
Prepare a comprehensive report on social forestry in Pakistan in general and in Balochistan in particular, possible areas in which social forestry can be adopted, type of species and their methods of production on commercial scale, potential of using the products within the country and possible export.
Interact with potential donors with UNDP support to explore the possibilities of partnership in the project.
Present the findings to the potential donors and high Government & UND officials.
Deliverables
Feasibility report on social forestry in Balochistan and usage of its products within the country and export potential
Concept note along with detailed budget for a larger project
Powerpoint presentation for presenting the findings and possible project to the potential donors and high Government officials.
Time-Frame
30 days in July-August 2005
Reporting Arrangements
The consultant will work under the direct supervision of the National Project Director of Area Development Program Balochistan and the Chief, Sustainable Livelihoods Unit, UNDP, Islamabad.
